Now this is interesting, apart using the ever-popular Botox to keep the wrinkles at bay, you can use the shot to improve some of the symptoms associated with depression. Read on to know how it works.
Depression is not new and by today’s standard it’s not something you can joke about; as we’re living in a fast-paced world where a little bit of vanity and narcissistic tags along, you’re so much likely to get depressed more than ever before – the competition and loneliness is prevalent and we tend to get less resilient by each day.
The usual course of treatment for depression is by combining a healthy diet (especially fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids), workouts, and with a support group that get you through things (perhaps a shrink along the way) in life. And now, Botox can also be used to help you ease out from depression, gradually and substantially.
As reported by the Journal of Psychiatric Research, patients in a large randomized and placebo controlled study that shows symptoms associated with depression produces substantial improvement more than half (greater than equal to 50% of their baseline measurement) after six weeks.
By injecting a single shot of onabotulinumtoxinA (OBA), it is found that the improvement is substantial and significant, without producing any side effects (though we’d call a rejuvenated-looking skin is a bonus point!) and no conflict with other treatments. Hence in a way, you can use it as a standalone treatment for depression or in conjunction with other usual stuff prescribes to ease depression away.
From the findings of using Botox to treat depression, the conclusion supports the early feedback theory that suggests facial expressions inherently influences the mood (well, I suppose it’s obvious). And to quote from the words from one of the scientists involved in the research, Prof. Tillmann Kruger, “Our emotions are expressed by facial muscles, which in turn send feedback signals to the brain to reinforce those emotions. Treating facial muscles with botulinum toxin interrupts this cycle,”
While the mechanism can’t really be explained in biological terms (except the part where the toxin kind of like freezes the muscle that are used for expressions), ‘erasing’ the lines that are associated with negative emotions helps a lot to change your whole appearance dramatically, and simply put, people will start to approach you in positive way, which in turn, helps you from the inside.
